Performing Arts

Performing ArtsPerforming Arts offers students the opportunity to explore, experience and communicate their creative expression through dance music and drama. The program at Mercy College is vibrant and alive with opportunities for the students to participate in a variety of activities. These include:

  • College Musical
  • Dance concerts
  • Music Ensembles (choirs, concert band, rock groups)

Drama

College Musical

As well as the regular performance opportunities afforded to students undertaking Drama within the curriculum, the College also offers students the chance to be involved with the College musical. Students are encouraged to participate in all aspects of the musical, including performance, working as sound and lighting technicians, working backstae and by taking on leadership positions within the cast and crew. The College production is supported by parent and student interest. Recent productions include 'Bugsy Malone' (2005),'Seussical: the Musical' (2006), 'Annie' (2008) and 'A Servant of Two Masters' (2009).

Dance

In offering activities outside the classroom, the Dance faculty hopes to broaden the dance experiences of students. A variety of activities are offered throughout the year, the largest being Dance week. DuringDance week students are able to participate in a diverse range of lunchtime workshops and view a studio performance of student works.

Workshops are also offered throughout the year which allows students to work with various choregraphers. This gives students the opportunity to experience an assortment of dance teaching styles and choreographic aproaches. Occasionally thechoreographers are current Mercy College students which gives them experience in choreographing and teaching. Viewing professional dance performances is made accessible to students in a number of ways including optional excursions to performances during the Melbourne International Arts Festival.

There are also many occasions available where students can perform including College assemblies, lunchtime performances, youth week, Speech night and the end of year concert.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts is a creative form of expression that enables students to communicate their ideas, experiences, and opinions through diverse visual mediums. The College environment celebrates students work through displays of ceramics, paintings, sculptures, and multimedia.

Visual Arts encourages students to find different and varied ways of self-expression., to help individuals nurture their creative self. Student work is submitted to a range of exhibitions in order to promote and celebrate our rich diversity of expression. A Night of Excellence, is held at the end of the year celebrating and displaying an extensive display of Visual art work created throughout the year.
