Year 7 Transition

We recognise that the move from primary to secondary school can be a big change for each student and their family.

All of our Year 7 students are involved in a comprehensive Transition Program that provides a firm foundation for secondary education. Specially-tailored programs begin well before a student arrives at Mercy.

TRANSITION VISITS

Throughout November, every student who is starting Year 7 at Mercy College the following year is visited at their primary school by one/some of the following staff - the Junior School Leader, the Educational Support Leader, the Director of Student Wellbeing and the Principal.

Visiting Mercy College staff meet with the student and their teacher to gain as much information about the learning journey the student has been on so far, to enable us to put strategies in place to ensure each and every student is supported in their transition to secondary school. This information, together with data gained from literacy and numeracy testing which takes place on Transition Day, assists us in forming our homeroom groups so that the learning potential for all students is maximised.

SOLO STUDENTS AFTERNOON TEA

An afternoon tea is held mid November for all students, and their parents/guardians, who are coming to Mercy without peers from their primary school. This provides all our “solo” students a chance to meet others prior to the Transition Day.

INFORMATION EVENING

An information evening is held mid November for parents/guardians and their daughters . The evening will provide information on:

  • Mercy College - a Learning Community
  • Student Wellbeing at Mercy College
  • Preparing for Secondary School
  • Transition Day
  • Questions and Answers

TRANSITION DAY

Students attend a Transition Day in late November.

The girls participate in various “get to know you” activities so that they begin the process of transitioning into Mercy College before the official start of Year 7.

Junior School staff introduce the girls to a typical pastoral care session.  The girls meet the other students in their “house” and participate in a house tabloid sports competition.

Current Year 7 students assist with the day so that they can share their experiences with the girls.

All students undertake a literacy and numeracy test on this day, as well as a music aptitude test. These tests assist us in ensuring the learning potential for all students is maximised.

Saturday 11 August - 10.00am until 11.00am
